Rare early trade sign for Levering Coffee Co. Excellent old untouched surface. The gold leaf painted letters appear to have been poorly touched up a very long time ago, likely when the sign was still in use. Excellent craquelure. Attractive beveled oval shape on this great survivor.  A true piece of Baltimore history. Included as a bonus is an original color lithograph trade card from the 1880’s.

In Baltimore in 1842, Eugene Levering and his brother, Frederick, established a company that dealt in groceries and dry goods. When Frederick died in 1866, Eugene took his three sons as partners, and changed the name of the Company to E. Levering & Co. Shortly after, the company began specializing in coffee, and changed their name to Levering Coffee Company. The company is still in business today.
