Heavy stoneware bean pot stamped “LOG CABIN.” Unglazed red colored clay exterior. Inside has a clear glaze. Despite the color of the clay, this is definitely stoneware, not redware. Heavy base wear indicates many years of use. Rare marked piece. Nice compact size. Likely produced in the Mid-Atlantic region in the years following the Civil War.

Date: 1860-80

Size: 5 1/2″ tall. 6″ greatest diameter.

Condition: Barely noticable blackened rim chip above the “L.” Typical in-making pops and dents. No cracks.

A few thoughts on stoneware: Stoneware was originally designed as utilitarian objects. Typically, these pieces were put into service for many years. As such, stoneware will generally show signs of heavy wear and usage. Some chips and cracks are usually in evidence, and serve as reminders that stoneware was first and foremost meant to be functional. These factors should be taken into account when evaluating a piece.
