Nice figural cast iron doorstop, referred to as “Major Domo.”  Depicts a black (African American?) man with a white wig and dressed as a general. Could possibly be modeled after Toussaint-Louverture, who led a successful Haitian revolution in the late 18th century. Wildly colored original painted surface.

A number of early 20th century iron doorstops were sold unpainted, and the new owner would then choose and apply his or her own pallette of colors. This appears to be one of those unique examples. The diversity and range of colors on identically cast doorstops is one of the influential factors that can legitimately push these molded objects into the folk art category of collecting.

This is a great example. Weighs slightly under 5lbs.
