Brass pocket fleam used for bloodletting. Three steel blades in graduated sizes. Signed on the smallest blade, “G. GREGORY.” Prior to the advent of modern medicine, it was believed that most diseases were caused by infections of the blood. The simplest method for removing these “bad humours” was bloodletting. Unfortunately, the loss of blood and the potential infections caused by the less than sanitary blades of dirty fleams often resulted in the opposite of the intended remedy. Excellent old untouched surfaces. A great centuries old medical piece.
