Exceptional figural sewer tile doorstop. Thick yellow mustard-like glaze. Unusual embossed flowers. Incised initials and inked collection # on base. Heavy stoneware piece weighs well over 3lbs. Wonderful character to this rare example.
A few thoughts on stoneware: Stoneware was originally designed as utilitarian objects. Typically, these pieces were put into service for many years. As such, stoneware will generally show signs of heavy wear and usage. Some chips and cracks are usually in evidence, and serve as reminders that stoneware was first and foremost meant to be functional. These factors should be taken into account when evaluating a piece.
Date: Late 19th century.
Size: 6 1/2″ long. 3″ wide. 4 1/2″ tall.
Condition: A number of in-making glaze imperfections – including a horizontal line below the flowers. These imperfections are fairly typical for this type of heavy stoneware which was fired at an extremely high temperature. Overall excellent, particularly for a doorstop.
