Fun folk art whimsy cane with floating ball in cage just below the handle. Carved pine with a lizard and rattlesnake. Crudely inscribed, “Finished,” followed by what looks like initials and numbers. The last two numbers appear to be “49.” It is possible that the cane was “finished” with a coat of varnish in 1949, though the piece is clearly much older. Also, the quality of the lettering is not equal to the rest of the piece. I have owned a number of similar style canes, and all were made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Possibly a child inherited the cane at the later date, and decided to freshen it up, and add his mark. Regardless, it is a wonderful primitive example.
